WALA STARS Legislative Day 2008

February 8, 2008

Meeting George Washington. Rub his nose for good luck! The entire STARS team, including our students and students from Ellensburg, Silverdale, Port Orchard and Vancouver, met with Senator Rosemary McAuliffe, Chair of the Senate Early Learning and K-12 Education committee.
Our students met with Rep. Kevin Van de Wege and discussed bills and legislative issues. The ICE student leadership team with Rep. Kevin Van de Wege.
Here we are outside the House Floor. Our team enjoyed visiting the Justice Building and admiring the marble.
Our ICE Supreme Court. We were fascinated by all the books of laws in the law library.

Proper posture is important for meeting with legislators. We chose to practice on the way to lunch. The notebooks also kept our hair dry. These ornate doors outside the Capitol building are intricately carved with Washington scenes.

Past Events:

Halloween Carnival

Thanks to our ASB crew for helping with Grant Street PTA's Halloween carnival: Wendy S, Wendy Q, Morgan, Daniel, Amy, Sam, Alex, Mikayla, Emily, Becca SP, and Becca ST. Way to be part of the Grant Street community!

WALA  S.T.A.R.S. Leadership Conference

Friday, October 5th, Bremerton, WA

WALA Conference

Thanks to Wendy S and Wendy Q who represented the WALA STARS leadership project at this year's 32nd Annual WALA Conference in Vancouver, WA, on March 8-10, 2007. These girls presented information to an audience of nearly 300, then actively participated in a session detailing the WALA STARS program to a group of 20-25 conference attendees.  Congratulations on your awesome leadership skills!

The WALA  S.T.A.R.S.  program is part of a state-wide student leadership program for students in alternative education programs, and is organized by the Washington Association for Learning Alternatives (WALA).  A Spring STARS conference will be held in Auburn on Friday, May 4th.

WALA STARS Legislative Day 2007

Members of the WALA STARS Leadership team, Kavin and Wendy S, are in the forefront of statewide student leadership in the alternative education world. Together with Lacey, Morgan, Chelsea, Wendy Q, Amy, and Teacher Darlene, they were joined by students and staff from alternative programs in Sequim, Port Orchard, Silverdale, Tacoma, and Lacey in Olympia on February 2, 2007 as part of the state Alternative Education Day.

ICE students met with Governor Chris Gregoire, Education Chair Senator Rosemary McAuliffe, our District 24 Representatives Lynn Kessler and Kevin Van deWege, and Senator Jim Hargrove.

House          --          Senate

Students had the opportunity to see the Senate in action, stand on the floor of the House of Representatives, and tour the Capitol Building. We also visited historical monuments on the capitol campus, and visited the Justice Building to learn about the history of laws, read parts of the Port Townsend Municipal Code, and see the courtroom for the State Supreme Court.
