Instruction Procedure 2421P: Promotion/Retention

Grades K-8:
Prior to the middle of the school year when possible the teacher will confer with the principal regarding any student who should be considered for retention. Parents/guardians shall be invited to meet with the principal and teacher. Information will be presented to explain the student's progress to date. Parents will be advised on how they might assist the student during the balance of the school year.

At least two (2) weeks prior to the end of the school year, the parent, principal and teacher will again meet to review the latest progress and determine if the student's need would be best served by promotion or retention. If the parent wishes the student to be promoted without regard to the school's recommendation, the parent(s) will be asked to complete a form reflecting the parent's decision.

Grades 9-12:
Promotion
Promotion to the next grade level in high school is dependent upon the following credit accrual system:

  1. Freshman year (Grade 9) the student will earn up to 6 credits.
  2. Sophomore year (grade 10) the student must have earned 4.5-12 credits.
  3. Junior year (grade 11) the student must have earned 10.5-18 credits.
  4. Senior year (grade 12) the student must have earned 16.5-22.5+ credits.

A student with fewer than 16.5 credits may be considered a senior after developing a reasonable plan to compete deficiencies. The plan must be approved by the counselor and principal.

The graduation requirement is 22.5 credits earned in required and elective courses as defined in Policy 2410: Graduation Requirements. To receive credit for any course the student must earn a D grade or better.

Intervention
At-risk students will be identified by teachers and counselors as early in the grading period as possible. The counselor, teacher(s), and student will develop an Intervention Plan which will be shared with the parents. The counselor will monitor student progress and keep parents informed. Deficiency notices will be sent home for classes in which the student is in danger of failing.

Other Options
Student may earn credits through options other than the standard high school programs according as per Policy 2410/2410P. These options should be discussed with the counselor.
