Art Gallery Walk & Science Fair

On April 26, 2007, Grant Street School held its annual Art Gallery Walk and Science Fair. The Art Gallery Walk featured the works of students from kindergarten through 12th grade, and included living art exhibits of student selected art masters by the second grade students in Susie Kunz and Dorothy Stengel's classes.

We are all indebted to our art teacher, Kim Fairbanks, for her work with our students, and to Grant Street PTA for sponsoring art education at Grant Street School and for putting together this event.

At the same time, about 40 students displayed their science projects in the gym as part of the Science Fair. During the month of April, students worked at home with their families using a template of the scientific method (hypothesizing, testing, observation, and drawing conclusions). Using display boards, the students presented their work for students and community review. All classes toured the Science Fair during the day, and the gym was open for parent review during the Gallery Walk.

The photographs below illustrate some of the work and exhibits displayed at the Gallery Walk and Science Fair.

Second-grader Amelia's presentation of photos and facts about rough-skinned newts - amphibians whose habitat includes the Port Townsend area.

The Science Fair provides opportunities for hands-on exploration and science dialogue among students and their families.

First-grader Marco's display on electricity
gives other students a chance to test
electrical circuits.

Kindergartner Logan's work on electricity includes opportunities for students to test
the conductivity of various common
household items.

Second-grader Tate integrated digital photography into his experiment involving testing for bacteria.

He hypothesized that of the five places he tested, the girls' bathroom would have the most bacteria. Instead he found that the "nastiest" place in the school was the computer keyboard and mouse in the principal's office!

(Maybe Dr. Finch needs to wash his hands more often!)
