Port Townsend School District Policy 3112: Elementary Student Assignment Student assignment shall be implemented to address appropriately the educational needs of the individual student within the context of the educational needs of the student community. The principal is responsible for student assignment within each elementary school. Parental and staff input are important sources for the principal in considering the educational needs of the individual student. Equal educational opportunity must be assured for each student. All student assignments shall be non-discriminatory with respect to gender, ethnicity, and handicap. Factors that will be considered when assigning students to classrooms will include gender, ethnicity, academic ability, social and emotional development, and special needs. Every effort will be made to balance classes with respect to these factors and class size. It may be necessary to separate certain students. ADOPTED: May 16, 1991
