Port Townsend High School Drama Students will present a short play entitled simply, The Tree by Colin Bradie, Friday and Saturday, January 19 and 20th at 7:00 pm in the PTHS auditorium.

Originally created and performed at the Lyceum Theater in Edinbourogh, Scotland, this play centers around a future time when only one tree remains on earth.  Everyone, from carpenters to pirates and papermakers to politicians, wants a piece of the tree.  With some obvious and some subtle messages about the environment and human nature, The Tree satirizes everyone, including tree hugging environmentalists and current political figures.

Director, Jennifer Nielsen, states, “The satire in this play insults all groups equally.  Don’t expect political correctness.  You won’t find it with this production.”

Chosen for the challenges it presents to acting students, the play is broad farce; a comedy of epic proportions which requires much of the student actors.  They must shed their inhibitions and risk looking silly, which is sometimes the hardest thing for high school students.

Jennifer Ewing, recent PTHS graduate who has been accepted at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, brought the play to Nielsen’s attention.  Ewing performed the play in Scotland at the Lyceum several years ago and assistant directs this production.
