Pictured are PT's Mock Trial team from State. They are pictured with Washington State Supreme Court Justice Mary Fairhurst and Clark County Superior Court Judge Robert Lewis. PTHS defeated Mercer Island HS and Lynnwood HS, and lost close split decisions against Seattle Prep Academy and Archbishop Murphy to finish 9th at State.

What is Mock Trial?

The YMCA Mock Trial program allows students to participate in a "true-to-life" courtroom drama. Each team of attorneys and witnesses prepares the case for trial before a real judge in an actual courtroom. A "jury" of attorneys rates teams for their presentation while the presiding judge rules on the motions, objections, and ultimately the merits. Participants develop critical thinking and analytical skills, learn the art of oral advocacy, and gain a respect for the role of law and the judiciary.

Mock Trial is an academic competition in which each team in the state has been given the same legal case to try. Each team has attorneys for the prosecution and defense and their own witnesses. The defense of one team competes against the prosecution of the opposing team. Total points from the two separate trials determines the overall winner.

The competition requires knowledge of Washington state laws and statutes, familiarity with forensics, legal strategizing and reasoning, on-you-feet debating, and dramatic skills. The PTHS 2A team competes against schools of all enrollment classifications to see who can present the most solid legal case.
