Advanced Placement (A.P.) and Honors Classes

PTHS offers a variety of Advanced Placement and Honors level classes for students who are able to handle some advanced curriculum in addition to their regular class work.  It is important to note that students who sign up for AP or Honors components may be required to attend additional class seminars outside of the regular school day, or during homeroom or lunch times.  Additional course work requirements will include enhanced assignments that must be completed at higher levels of comprehension, synthesis and evaluation. Additional reading is also required.  Students who successfully complete the AP or Honors work will have the AP or Honors course listed on their transcript.

For example: US Studies  vs. Honors US Studies vs. AP American Government (official AP class title for US Studies)

Honors and AP doesn’t just mean more work. It means advanced work that must be completed at higher levels of excellence to be accepted by the teacher.  An assignment that is adequate in US Studies would not be adequate in the Honors or AP class of that same subject area.

What is an Honors or AP teacher?

Honors- Teachers at the high school level may apply to offer an honors level class through demonstration of their ability to present and teach advanced levels of curriculum beyond coursework expectations.

AP-  Teachers at PTHS may provide instruction in AP coursework only if they have attended the AP Training Institute or have taught subject related classes at the college level.
