Port Townsend High School MS. MCMATHER During World History class periods, Ancient and Modern students are presented material, which reinforces, extends, updates, replaces and/or elaborates upon subject content in the textbook. This learning may occur in the form of teacher lectures, presentation of visual and video materials, simulations, reenactments, guest speakers, group and individual research and presentations, discussions and writing exercises. Participating in class activities is a requirement. While some make-up materials and options may be available for individual class lessons missed, these substitutes are not in and of themselves the equivalent of participating in class sessions. In Advanced English 9 class periods students are presented material, which presents, reinforces, extends, and/or elaborates upon subject content, only some of which may be found in the textbook and novels. This learning may occur in the form of teacher lectures, presentation of visual and video materials, simulations, reenactments, guest speakers, group and individual research and presentations, discussions and writing exercises. Participating in class activities is a requirement. Oral presentations, listening, note taking, discussion are required. Even when some make-up materials or options may be available for individual class lessons missed, these substitutes are not in and of themselves the equivalent of participating in class sessions. Book Publications is essential a laboratory class culminating in a team-developed product. There is no textbook for the class, although there may be handouts to accompany lecture-demonstrations. Discussion and peer review is the norm. Photography and copywriting may be initiated outside the classroom, but downloading, image selection, page layout, editing and proofreading activities occur in the classroom. The major portion of the students’ grades is determined by their work process and the quality of their work on the yearbook. Following the completion of the yearbooks, students embark on an in-class spring learning project, creation of the spring supplement and then finally distribution of the yearbook.
