Choose one. Writing assignments must be handwritten and may be illustrated.
1) WRITE: In the story of The Isle of Winds, what were the consequences of the sailors’ disobedience and curiosity? Include:
floating island wall of bronze, shining hotly in sun
great leather bag, made from skin of an enormous ox - silver wire
3 tame pigeons tame dove settled on a fist
people sitting by fires on the shore Odysseus asleep
sack full of gold and silver a few mangy sheep

2) WRITE: What happened on Cannibal Island to cause Odysseus and his sailors to weep? Include:
ring of high cliffs which could only be entered by narrow channel
11 ships tied up in sheltered waters and 1 ship tied up outside cove
bubbling spring tall woman fetching water
giant with blood smeared all over his beard
rocks the size of wolves and boulders splintering decks
spears with ropes tied to them one ship in the open sea
3) WRITE: a letter" from Odysseus' point of view, addressed to either Telemachus or Penelope back home. In the postcard, be sure to do each of the following:
• Briefly explain any challenges you faced
• Explain, specifically, how the gods helped or harmed you
• Share your thoughts or reaction to the events (be sure to stay true to Odysseus' personality!)
• Anything else Odysseus might wish to tell the recipient
4) WRITE: In Book 10 (includes The Isle of Winds, Cannibal Island and Circe’s Island): how did Odysseus save his men?

5) WRITE: Describe Circe, the Enchantress. In what ways is she like / not like a goddess? In what ways is she like / not like a witch?
How did Odysseus free his men? What choice does he make after they are freed?
Writing tips:
Make the paragraph the unit of composition Use the active voice.
Put the statements in positive form. Use definite, specific, concrete language.
Omit needless words. Avoid a succession of loose sentences.
Express coordinate ideas in similar form. Keep related words together.
In summaries, keep to one tense. Place the emphatic words of a sentence at the end.
