The Odyssey Books 6-10

Choose one. Writing assignments must be handwritten and may be illustrated.
1) WRITE: Think of Odysseus's choice of behavior at the moment when he meets princess Nausicaa. How could he have responded? Describe how he acts and what he looks like. Describe the ways his appearance changes during the encounter. Explain why his appearance changes.

2) WRITE: Describe what Odysseus does among the Phaecians. Is he proud? humble? Think about the tears of Odysseus upon hearing the songs of Demodocos. What does the poet sing about? Why does Odysseus cover his tears? How does the king respond?

3) WRITE: Consider the response of Odysseus to the challenge at the athletic games. What is the wisdom implicit in his refusal to play? Does Odysseus's subsequent throwing of discus contradict this wisdom?

4) WRITE: Imagine that you have landed on an island. Using at least five of the images below, write about what you experience. Be sure to include characters, actions, setting and theme. Be sure to have a clear beginning, middle and end in your story.

5) WRITE: a letter, from Odysseus' point of view, addressed to either Telemachus or Penelope back home.  Be sure to include the following:
• Briefly explain any challenges you have faced
• Explain, specifically, how the gods have helped or harmed you
• Share your thoughts or reaction to the events (be sure to stay true to Odysseus' personality!)
• Anything else you, Odysseus, might wish to tell the recipient

6) WRITE: a description of The Cyclops. Include his looks, personality and actions. WRITE: a description of The Cyclops’s cave.
Writing tips:
Make the paragraph the unit of composition Use the active voice.
Put the statements in positive form. Use definite, specific, concrete language.
Omit needless words. Avoid a succession of loose sentences.
Express coordinate ideas in similar form. Keep related words together.
In summaries, keep to one tense. Place the emphatic words of a sentence at the end.
