H - 1. WRITE: Langston Hughes wrote many poems about dreams: Dream Keeper, Dreams, In Times of Silver Rain, Daybreak in Alabama, Dream Variations. Choose a metaphor he uses in one of his dream poems and explain what you think he means by it.
H - Create a metaphor to express a dream you have and write a poem.

2. WRITE: Some of Langston Hughes's poems are about dreams that are not fulfilled. Write a story in which a character has a dream, tries to fulfill the dream, but is unable to realize the dream. Include the emotions of frustration, disappointment and anger that the character experiences.

4. WRITE: a detailed character sketch of:
a strong-willed elderly woman who values her privacy
Include her physical characteristics, her gestures, her dress, her tone of voice, her personality traits, her responses to the world around her, the setting surrounding her, lessons we can learn from her

6. WRITE: “Blues Ain’t No Mockin’ Bird” by Toni Cade Bambara is written from the point of view of a minor character. Write a summary of “Blues Ain’t No Mockin’ Bird” from the point of view of Granny.

H - 7. WRITE: There are two hawks in “Blues Ain’t No Mockin’ Bird” by Toni Cade Bambara. Discuss in writing the symbolism of the two hawks in the story. In what ways might the hawks stand for Granny and Granddaddy, or, perhaps, the photographers?Consider the following facts about hawks: hawks are birds of prey; female hawks are usually larger than male birds; hawks mate for life.

Writing tips:
Make the paragraph the unit of composition Use the active voice.
Put the statements in positive form. Use definite, specific, concrete language.
Omit needless words. Avoid a succession of loose sentences.
Express coordinate ideas in similar form. Keep related words together.
