short story - “The Scarlet Ibis”
Choose one of the following.
Writing assignments must be handwritten and may be illustrated.
1. Write a paragraph describing the elements of a narrative story (CAST). Write at least one sentence about each element. Include examples from the poems and stories we have read together this week.
2. Create a puppet and write a description of one of the characters from one of the stories we read this week Include physical appearance, personality traits, actions, flaws, emotions expressed, how other characters respond to him/her. Examples - the lady, the knight, the king from The Glove and the Lions; Casey, the crowd, one of the baseball players who got a hit from Casey at the Bat; the narrator, Doodle, Mama, Daddy, Aunt Nicey from “The Scarlet Ibis.”
3. Edit one of the following journal entries into a finished writing piece:
Write a dashing tale with speed and vigor. Make the action swift and dramatic!

Have you ever “struck out”? Write about a time when you were expected to do something well and you simply couldn't do it.

Writing tips: Make the paragraph the unit of composition
Use the active voice.
Put the statements in positive form.
Use definite, specific, concrete language.
Omit needless words.
Avoid a succession of loose sentences.
Express coordinate ideas in similar form.
Keep related words together.
In summaries, keep to one tense.
Place the emphatic words of a sentence at the end.
