Choose one. Writing assignments must be handwritten and may be illustrated.

1. Write three (3) sentences describing the elements of story (CAST) in The Highwayman. Write one sentence about a character, one describing a setting, one describing an action. Label subjects, predicates, describing words (adjectives and adverbs) Be sure to use punctuation correctly.

2. Edit one of the following journal entries into a finished writing piece:

A person you love’s life is at stake! Time is running out. What do you do?
(inspired by Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight )

Write a hunting story including deer, hounds, men.
(inspired by The Revenge of Hamish)

Write how the shepherd outwitted the king in King John and the Abbot of Canterbury

3. Complete your map of northwestern India. Write elements of The Ballad of East and West decoratively around the map.

4. Write: In the readings this week, the idea of class or privilege contributed to the conflict in the stories. Write a composition siting examples of how issues of class moved the stories along and affected changes in the characters.

Writing tips: Make the paragraph the unit of composition
Use the active voice.
Put the statements in positive form.
Use definite, specific, concrete language.
Omit needless words.
Avoid a succession of loose sentences.
Express coordinate ideas in similar form.
Keep related words together.
In summaries, keep to one tense.
Place the emphatic words of a sentence at the end.
