Improvement Plan
Mission Statement:
Port Townsend High School staff, parents, students and community create a safe, respectful environment where all students are challenged to become learners, achievers and responsible citizens.
Desired Learning Outcomes:
Upon graduation from Port Townsend High School, students will:
- Think logically, analytically, and creatively to form reasoned judgments and become effective problem solvers and decision makers
- Will have a solid foundation of subject area knowledge across disciplines
- Acquire skills in writing, reading, computation, technology, communication, research and organizational skills
- Develop and reflect inter-personal skills that lead to tolerance, respect, integrity, and responsibility toward others in the local and global community
- Will be prepared for the future with a solid base of employment skills and work ethics
- Will take an active role in their community
Goals: Port Townsend High School will:
- PTHS will make education our first priority
- PTHS will focus on teaching and learning by emphasizing literacy and numeracy at the core of all instruction
- PTHS will provide a learning environment that is emotionally and physically safe, and that reinforces responsibility, accountability and communication between students, parents and staff.
Goals: Improve writing instruction at PTHS
Target 1: Increase WASL Writing Scores by 5%
Target 2: Increase writing instruction and proficiency through meaningful projects in each class.
Tasks
- Standardize writing requirements across subject areas
- Teachers will incorporate more formal writing assignments in their classes. PTHS teachers will incorporate a writing component into ALL high school classes.
- Teachers will present student work samples to demonstrate an increase in classroom writing instruction.
Goal: Improve math instruction at PTHS
Target 1: Increase WASL Math Scores by 5%
Target 2: Increase math performance through focused professional development for math teachers at PTHS

- Utilize available state resources for improving student performance on WASL related items
- Provide for a math WASL preparation (after school) session during 2nd semester
- Provide support for ICE students to comfortably access math classesat the high school
- Coordinate support between English and Math instructors to train students in reading and vocabulary strategies on WASL related items
- Rewording the question in the answer
- State the answer clearly
- Restate support for the given answer
- Provide structure for a math vertical team, led by PTHS math department
- Continue to utilize daily opening exercises that include WASL items
- Provide professional development opportunities for PTHS math teachers through ESD, OSPI and locally trained experts.
