Site Council Minutes 3/3/08

Forums – Julie has hosted a meeting with the Healthy Youth Coalition and other interested community groups.  They came up with an idea to use the last Thursday and Friday block days in April (24/25) for 1.5 hours each day for Mark Wineblatt to do his Project Justice interactive theatre with the kids.  When the kids aren’t in the assembly, they will be attending 2 different sessions led by health professionals to discuss issues that are important to today’s teens.  We could also possibly do a Rachael’s Challenge program opposite the Wineblatt presentation.  Teachers are supportive of either scenario.  Rachael’s challenge is a program about school climate and how it affects the community.  The program is based on the incidents of Columbine.  Julie will work with to see if the Rachael’s Challenge assembly can take place.  If not, we will move toward the sessions led by health professionals.  Kelly Matlock is also looking at putting together a parent component on the Thursday (4/24) night.

Library – Tracy Rennie reported to Carrie last week that she is still looking for consistent volunteers to keep the library open after school.  She has found folks who are interested, but no one that is able to commit on a regular basis.

Freshman Transition – Julie, Carrie, Martina and Tim met last week to talk about Navigation 101.  All have found success and challenges with the program.  We talked about a better way to meet the transition needs, the first six weeks could be a benefit for all students to have transition activities in the grade level teams.  Shelia brought up the benefit of having some type of advisory for our kids, so that they each have a school mentor, beyond relying on their counselor.  Another idea would be to have parent orientations for each grade level at the beginning

School Bond - Beth Juran reported that the school bond committee will have a meeting on Wednesday, March 12 at 7:00 p.m. at the Elks Club.  Bond supporters will be coming to the meeting to get fliers and information to distribute to friends and neighbors.  There will also be a presentation on the bond.  Beth has more information for anyone who is interested.

Portfolios -  The school needs to make sure the website is updated and that there is accurate information regarding the senior culminating project on it.

Site Council Enthusiasm – Beth and Carrie had a meeting about the enthusiasm on the Site Council.  Last year the group went wild and tackled several issues and now several members of the group is tired.  How do we proceed so that we remain effective?  Shelia suggested that we start to build a list-serve of people by grade level, of parents who are willing to volunteer or want to participate in certain activities.

TATU – Martina will be taking 20 students to get trained in Teens Against Tobacco Use.   They will become trainers for a 4th grade tobacco resistance education program at Mt. View.

We concluded the meeting talking about challenges with curriculum and the need to update text materials and classroom supplies.  Teachers have worked on vertical teams to align what they are doing in the classroom with state standards.

Next Site Council meeting is Monday, April 28th.
