Girls Soccer Results 2005
Sat. 11/5 - Away vs. Steliacoom (L)
What a night for soccer. The rain was pouring down, the wind was blowing,
and it was about 39 degrees. By the time the game started, everyone was
already soaked to the bone. This game was a battle of the most elemental
kind. PT came out pumped up and ready to play in this game and for the first
time in a tough match-up all season, they were not scored on in the first 10
minutes. Steliacoom controlled the ball on PT's half for most of the first
half, but the majority of their attempted shots were off target or blocked
by PT defenders. There were several close calls such as when a ball rolled
through the legs of Jessie Stenehjem, but Quinn Grewell, playing with an
incredible amount of desire, hustled back behind her to kick the ball out of
harms way. Team defense was the name of the game. Quinn Grewell, Ursula
Swantner, Anna Akins, and Margarete Moore really were well organized and
supported each other well in the backfield.
At half-time everyone was freezing and wet, no one could feel their fingers,
and the conditions only continued to get worse. With the advantage of the
wind in the second half (it had picked up dramatically) PT was able to
better control the ball offensively. They played with every ounce of energy
they could muster. They had several good opportunities, but none was able to
fall in the net. Regular time ended with the score still tied 0-0.
When the team came off at the end of regular time, PT goalkeeper Jessie
Stenehjem was on the edge of hypothermia. She was subbed out for freshman
Annie Wheeler-McHugh who had volunteered to be back-up goalkeeper at the
beginning of the season but never seen any playing time at that position. In
the sudden death overtime period, Steliacoom stepped up the attack and
created several offensive opportunities. Wheeler-McHugh had a nice save and
a great punt into the wind. But with the clock winding down in the period
and their advantage of the wind about to expire, Steliacoom ripped a long
hard shot difficult for any goalkeeper to handle into the PT net for the
game winner. Final Score 0-1. Jessie Stenehjem had 9 saves. Annie
Wheeler-McHugh had 1 save.
Thurs 11/3 - Away vs. Eatonville (L)
PT advanced to meet top seed Eatonville (record 14-0). This was an up-hill
battle for PT. By the end of the first half, three goals had already been
scored by Eatonville. PT rallied though and created more offensive pushes in
the second half. Unfortunately PT was unable to capitalize on any
opportunities as Eatonville chalked up four more scores of their own in the
second half. Final Score 0-7. Jessie Stenehjem had 17 saves. Eatonville
moved on to the District Championship, PT moved onto the 3rd place match.
Tues 11/1 - Away vs. Klahowya (W)
In an exciting rematch from the previous week, PT met again with Klahowya at
Silverdale Stadium in a District playoff single elimination game, Klahowya
came out strong and dominated most of the first half, scoring their first
goal in the second minute of the game. PT held them off though with PT
sweeper Quinn Grewell playing great team defense and goalkeeper Jessie
Stenehjem make several great saves to keep PT in the game. In the second
half, PT really picked up steam, in 52nd minute freshman Sophie Wilson
scored off a great header. At that point the momentum shifted and it
energized the entire PT team. In the 57th minute, Jenny Peterson scored her
first goal of the season off a Claire Sarff-Foden pass. And finally, in the
63rd minute, Emma Gunn Thompson scored off a long ball from the midfield.
Klahowya rallied, pulling a defender to create more offensive opportunities.
They picked up the intensity and scored again with 7 minutes left in the
game. PT's defense really came through in the clutch though and pulled this
game out. Final Score 3-2. Jessie Stenehjem had 14 saves.
Tues 10/24 - Home vs. Klahowya (L)
In their final home game of the season, PT met again with Klahowya in league
play. (They met previously in a non-league match resulting in a 0-0 tie.) In
yet another game, PT found themselves down early when Klahowya scored in the
eighth minute. PT pulled themselves together, but after a questionable
handball call in the PT box, Klahowya was up 2-0 at halftime. In the second
half, PT made a number of offensive adjustments including moving Nyasha
Macias Marable to forward and getting defender Ursula Swatner involved in
the attack. PT dominated the entire second half, picking up their level of
play significantly. Unfortunately it just wasn't enough to knock a couple
balls in the net. Final Score 0-2. Jessie Stenehjem had 7 saves.
Thurs. 10/20 - Home vs. Vashon (L)
Our two teams were very evenly matched. Vashon got out ahead quickly though
with a score only 6 minutes into the game. Their second score of the night
was a header in front of the goal off a long throw-in at 37 minutes. PT
stayed in the game and continued to move the ball well with excellent
passing. Jenny Peterson and Emma Gunn Thompson had several penetrating runs
throughout the game, but the Vashon goalkeeper scooped up everything that
came even close to the goal. Final Score 0-2. Jessie Stenehjem had 14 saves.
Tues 10/18 - Away vs. Sequim (W)
This was a tough match-up for PT who dominated the attack in the midfield,
but Sequim's defense was good at booting the ball away from dangerous areas
the entire game. Each team had their scoring opportunities but neither was
able to capitalize. The game went to 2 five minute overtime periods after
which the score was still tied. A shoot-out finally decided the game. Emma
Gunn Thompson, Nyasha Macias Marable, and Jenny Peterson all scored in the
shoot-out leading up to Alice Peterson putting in the game winning penalty
kick for PT. Final Score 1-0. Jessie Stenehjem had 11 saves.
Thurs. 10/13 - Away @ Seattle Christian (L)
For the second game in a row, PT started out with great intensity. Emma Gunn
Thompson put in a long ball from a wide angle at only 1:19 into the game. PT
controlled the opening minutes, but about 15 minutes into the game, Seattle
Christian stepped up the attack and was able to put in their own score at
18:53. Port Townsend held tough for the remainder of the half and went to
the break with the score tied 1-1. In the second half, PT worked hard but
was unable to hold off the attack nearly as well as they did in the first
period: Seattle Christian brought out the big guns and scored 4 times @
43:29, 45:29, 54:12, and 76:27. Final Score 1-5. Jessie Stenehjem had 17
saves.
Tues 10/11 - Home vs. Chimacum (W)
This game started very quickly with PT out in front. Nyasha Macias Marable
opened the scoring for PT at only 4:50 into the game. PT continued to
control the pace and play nicely. Alice Peterson put in the next goal off a
Nyasha pass at 15:45. In the second half, PT came out strong, again scoring
in the 4th minute: Sophie Wilson put one in with an assist from Nyasha.
Chimacum's only score of the ight came off a (Sophie Bowe) penalty kick in
the 72nd minute after a 1v1 foul in the Port Townsend box. And finally, with
4 minutes remaining in the game, Emma Gunn Thompson put in a score when her
corner kick went in the goal off a Chimacum player. Final Score 4-1. Jessie
Stenehjem had 6 saves.
Thursday 10/6 Home vs. Foster (W)
PT finally collected their first win of the season in this game against Foster. The match was dominated by PT who had great passing and movement of the ball. In the 11th minute, Alice Peterson scored off a long free kick to the far post. Alice was nearly uncontested in the midfield the entire game and scored for the second time of the night in the 59th minute. Defenders
Anna Akins, Ursula Swantner, and Margarete Moore even got involved in the attack - all three had long shots on goal. With one minute left to play in the game, Kelsea Thompson put in a header off a cross from Nyasha Macias Marable for the closing score of the night. Final Score 3-0. Jessie Stenehjem had 5 saves.
Tues 10/4 Away @ Eatonville (L)
A tough match-up for PT against the league's leader; Eatonville came out strong out of the gate and put in 3 goals in the first 9 minutes of the game. The entire game was played on PT's end of the field. By the end of the first half Eatonville's talent had amassed 2 more scores. PT made good adjustments at halftime and was able to contain and frustrate the attack much more in the second period, allowing only 1 goal. Final score 0-6. Jessie Stenehjem played an excellent game despite the score and had 19 saves.
Thursday 9/29 Home vs. North Mason (L)
After North Mason scored in the second minute of the first half, PT dominated the majority of this game. With great passing and combination play PT attacked the North Mason goal over and over again and were finally able to land one in the net when senior captain Alice Peterson scored off a long ball from the left side to tie things up. What an incredible night of soccer for PT. Fans were treated to some very exciting moments; unfortunately, the incredible effort just didn't result in a win. With the clock winding down at the end of the game, North Mason scored their second goal off a break-away, effectively ending the game for PT. Final Score 1-2. Jessie Stenehjem had 5 saves.
Tues 9/26 Away @ Cascade Christian (L)
This was a game primarily battled out in the midfield. The style of the two teams was pretty dramatically different however. PT uses short passes to move the ball offensively, and CC uses long balls to capitalize on their forwards' speed. In this match-up, the speed won out when Cascade Christian put in the only goal of the night with 4 minutes remaining in the first half. Port Townsend did have had a number of scoring opportunities but was unable to put one in the net the entire game. Final Score 0-1. Jessie Stenehjem had 14 saves.
Thursday, September 22 - Home vs. Steilacoom (L)
Steilacoom started the game with a strong offensive push which lead to the first goal of the game in the second minute. PT regrouped, but got beaten off the dribble in the backfield for the second time of the night when Steilacoom scored again at 19 minutes. With 2 minutes remaining in the half, PT's Alice Peterson put up a cross to the far post with Emma Gunn Thomson running on. The keeper stepped up to intercept the ball, tangled with Emma and lost. Emma beat the goal keeper and put the ball in the net.
A few minutes into the second half, Sophie Wilson put a tying goal into the net off a free kick from Alice Peterson, but the goal was called back due to offsides. PT had good defensive composure in the second half and moved the ball well offensively but were unable pull things together for another score. This was a very close and exciting game battled out in the midfield for the majority of the match. Final score 2-1. Jessie Stenehjem had 9 saves for PT.
Tuesday, September 20. - Away vs. Orting (L)
PT played a tough match-up against Orting. The score was really not reflective of the quality of soccer played by PT. Orting scored two goals early at 2 minutes and at 11.5 minutes. PT's only score of the night (and first goal of the season) came with only 10 seconds left in the first half
when striker Chloé Boland found herself with the ball at her feet in front of the goal with the nearest defender a step behind her. With only the goalkeeper to beat, Chloe made a good high shot over the goalkeeper which hit the underside of the goalpost and bounced into the net. PT played tough, but was unable to finish scoring opportunities, whereas Orting scored again
on well defended plays at 17 minutes and at 29 minutes. Final score 4-1. Jessie Stenehjem had 9 saves for PT.
Saturday, September 17 - Home against South Whidbey (L)
A tough non-league match-up for PT against a 3A school; South Whidbey played a picture perfect game. SW dominated the entire match, playing some excellent soccer: the score at the half was 2-0, PT hung in there but by the end of the game it was 6-0. We won't let this stop us, there are still many wins in us this season.
Thursday, September 15 - Home against Kings' West
Game Canceled
Wednesday, September 14 Away @ Klahowya
The team was put to the test for the first time in this non-league match-up against Klahowya on Wed. the 14th. It was a fast paced game on the turf at Silverdale Stadium. Each team played with a lot of heart and had several near misses, but neither was able to capitalize on any scoring
opportunities. Final Score 0-0. Jessie Stenehjem had 3 saves for PT. The teams will meet again for a league match on Tues., October 25th.
