Girls High School Soccer At Memorial Field Port Townsend

Varsity: Port Townsend 0 Sequim 5 (4)

It would have been great and entirely fitting to have ended the season in the style the team played all season but for whatever the reason it wasn't to be. Sequim came out with passion and capitalized on the nervous play of PT, effectively putting the game out of reach by half-time. PT rallied in the second half and camped around the Sequim goal but could not find the target. An own goal late in the second half after a rare Sequim breakaway capped a difficult night. The result however is never the whole story and last night we celebrated the immense contribution of our seniors: It gave us time to reflect on their careers and a season which the team won many games, played some fantastic soccer and earned the respect of every coach and team in the league.
Seniors:
Anna Akins, Cecily Rennie, Emma Gunn, Jenny Peterson, Jessie Stenehjem,
Kelsea Thompson, Quinn Grewell

Junior Varsity: Port Townsend 0) Sequim 1 (1))

In spite of having only one substitute the JV team dominated much of the game but unfortunately allowed the one early goal. Another great team effort bringing to an end an inspiring and very successful season for the JV's.

Girls High School Soccer At Memorial Field Port Townsend

Varsity: Port Townsend 1 (1) Klahowya 3 (1)

PT : Claire Foden (14 mins)
Klahowya #3 (34), #17 (69) #9 (79)

PT took the game to Klahowya for most of the first half and were rewarded in the 14th minute by Claire Foden scoring an excellently placed shot into an open goal after great work and cross by Cici Rennie. PT were looking at going in at half time a goal up but just before half time Sierra Cook lost her mark for once in the game and hit the net with a superb strike.
Margarete Moore became the PT second sweeper to be injured and could not start the second half. Jenny Peterson moved out of midfield and the general shape of the team felt the impact. Nevertheless PT put up a spirited and skillful performance with several chances created in the second half. The speed of the Klahowya forwards eventually won out against the tired legs of PT and 2 late goals put the game out of reach. Cici Rennie created real problems for the Klahowya defense and was tireless throughout the game. PT played much of the game with 5 freshmen on the field and each of them performed very well.

Junior Varsity: Port Townsend 2(0) Klahowya 1(1)

PT: Chun Peng Stankus (55 mins) Emelina Berkshire (65)
Two beautiful goals sealed this win for the JV's. Missing two key players for the entire second half the team showed skill and tenacity to craft an impressive win.

Girls High School Soccer At Kingston HS

Varsity: Kingston 2 (0) Port Townsend 2 (0)

PT : Claire Foden (49 mins), Khloe Frank (72)
Kingston: Kayla Campbell (41), Meghan Antoni (52)

Yet again PT dominated the first half and should have gone into the break up by at least one goal. Midfielders Emma Gunn and Jenny Peterson had outstanding games and controlled the midfield for the entire first half. The PT confidence was shaken after the break when Kayla Campbell made a solo run from the kick off to go relatively unchallenged through the defense and finish with a shot that ricocheted off a defender into the goal. It didn't take long however for Brianna Hemsley to wriggle past a couple of defenders and lay off a pass which Claire Foden finished superbly. Unfortunately Brianna was hurt on the play and could not return. Minutes later PT gave up a needless free kick on the edge of the penalty area and Meghan Antoni slammed the ball into the roof of the net. The final act was given to Khloe Frank who latched onto a wayward clearance and beat the Kingston goalkeeper from 25 yards out. Extra time could separate the teams. It was an excellent
game and perhaps a draw was a fair result.

Junior Varsity: Kingston 0 Port Townsend 1(1)

PT: Jessica Evalt (15 mins)
Another great win and another shut out for the JV's. To hang on to a one goal lead for most of the game shows the fighting spriti of this team.

Girls High School Soccer At Memorial Field

Varsity: Port Townsend 2 (1) Peninsula 0

PT : Elena Akins (25 mins), Brianna Hemsley (46)

At last PT played well and won. In so many games PT has come so close but tonight there was a confidence and commitment that made this a comfortable win. Every player contributed with no weak spots on the field. Freshman Elena Akins scored a superb solo goal in the first half, lifting her shot into the roof of the net. The second goal came from yet another determined run by Cici Rennie culminating in a great cross to the far post. Brianna Hemsley followed up her own shot to score. Great central midfield leadership from Emma Gunn and Jenny Peterson and Quinn Grewell was resolute in the back.

Junior Varsity: Port Townsend 1 (0) Peninsula 3 (1)

PT: Fuxia Stankus (60 min)

From the touchline it appeared that PT had by far the better of the play. It took a long time before Fuxia Stankus scored, in spite of a lot of attacking pressure. The first goal came against the run of play and the last two came inside the last 10 minutes. Jessica Evalt once again played a dominant role and should have been rewarded with a goal. Fuxia and Chun Peng Stankus were incredibly busy in mid field alongside Liya Rubio. The support and commitment continues to impress and PT deserved more from this game.

Varsity: Olympic 3 (3) Port Townsend 0

Olympic : Elizabeth Curry (21 mins), Megan Montambo (26), ? (39)

The game was decided in a few minutes in the 2nd quarter of the game. Lapses in marking cost PT dearly and although under some periods of pressure PT had a good percentage of the play. Injuries and sickness has taken a toll over the last few games but the team is still playing attractive soccer and the 5 freshmen are now all playing a big part. Olympic have some fine goal scorers but Jessie Stenehjem made some dazzling saves in her best game of the season so far.

Girls High School Soccer At Memorial Field Port Townsend

Varsity: Port Townsend 0 (HT 0) v Bremerton 2 (HT 1)

Bremerton : Minutes 30,70

Torrential rain didn’t stop this from being an exciting game with chances at both ends. It could be argued that PT had the better of the play for much of the game and indeed the first goal came against the run of play. The conditions were terrible but both teams moved the ball around well. Claire Foden, Khloe Frank, Elena Akins and Anna Akins were tireless in mid field with great support from the back four which include two freshmen – Jennifer Grauberger and Chelsey Hoglund. Scoring at this level has become a challenge but Brynne Gambill and Emma Gunn came close on a number of occasions. We couldn’t have asked for more heart and effort from the entire team.

Junior Varsity

Port Townsend 3 (HT 3) Bremerton 2 (0)

Port Townsend: Emelina Berkshire (26,31), Kerri Evalt 34 (penalty)

No shut out this time but this win completes a fifth successive win against league opposition. The team support one another all over the field and counter-attack with really incisive moves. A flurry of first half goals sealed the win but Bremerton rallied well in the second half. So many inexperienced players are developing very quickly and the results reflect their progress.

Girls High School Soccer At North Mason

Varsity: North Mason 5 (HT 3) v Port Townsend 1(HT 0)

Port Townsend goal scorer: Brynne Gambill (67 min)

North Mason : Minutes 7,13,27,40,62

Only in the last quarter did we see the Port Townsend team play their own game and produce a fine goal from Brynne Gambill. North Mason exhibited a tremendous desire to win and with speed and determination were able to turn defensive slips into goals. Injuries in key areas are beginning to take their toll but the team is still strong and showed great fight and strength under trying conditions.

Junior Varsity

North Mason 0 Port Townsend 1 (HT 1)

Brittany Bolling (31 min)

The JV’s once again had a shut-out and seem to have the ability to take pressure and still not let in any goals. They counter-attack with speed and look very dangerous when going forward, particularly Emelina Berkshire and Jessica Evalt. Excellent defensive play by Ella Piatt, Jordon Holbrook, and goalkeeper Annie McHugh but noticeably each player contributes to the effectiveness of the team.

Varsity:  Port Townsend High School 2 (HT 0) v Kingston HS 3 (2)

Scorers:

Port Townsend - Emma Gunn (47 minutes) Khloe Frank (53)

Kingston – 5 min, 30 min, 49 min. (no team sheet)

This first loss of the season came in spite of a fine performance from PT. Kingston will challenge most teams and scored from a beautiful free kick in the first few minutes but the two following goals were uncharacteristic errors by PT. In the second half PT tried to miss out the overcrowded mid field and were rewarded with a fine goal from Emma Gunn who fired home from a great cross by Cici Rennie in what was perhaps the best move of the game. The energy changed as PT went for the equalizer only to give up a goal moments later. Finally, Khloe Frank scored another beautiful free kick but that was to be the last of the scoring for the evening.

Junior Varsity

Port Townsend HS 1 (0) Kingston 0

Kerri Evalt (42 min)

Another impressive performance from the JV’s reversing the result of last Saturday. In spite of their inexperience they keep their shape well and counterattack with energy and imagination. The goal resulted from a nicely worked move down the left wing and resulted in Kerri Evalt being in the right place to finish off the move.

Girls High School Soccer At Sequim

Varsity:  Port Townsend High School 2 (HT 1) v Sequim HS  0

Scorers:

Port Townsend - Emma Gunn (28 minutes) Brianna Hemsley (64)

PTHS had a slow start against this talented Sequim team. Fortunately the defense was very sound with seniors Jenny Peterson, Quinn Grewell and Jessie Stenejhem and junior Margarete Moore preventing any serious attempts on goal. Once again it was the passing movements that started to undo the Sequim defense and PT should have scored a couple of times. The goal itself resulted from one of several mazy runs by Cici Rennie who laid off a beautiful pass to unmarked Emma Gunn who finished well.  Jessie Stenejhem made a terrific save to deny Sequim a goal and in the second half Sequim also came close on a couple of occasions, with Margarete Moore making one heroic stop on the line. The second goal came from another Khloe Frank through ball which Breanna Hemsley finished with great style.

Junior Varsity

Port Townsend HS 2 (1) Sequim 0 (0)

Emelina Berkshire (28 min) Chloe Boland (43)

Emelina Brekshire first half goal was a solo effort that showed the makings of a first class striker. PT should perhaps have put away more chances but it was left to Chloe Boland to run onto a fine pass from Fuxia Stankus and seal the win. The PT defense was rarely troubled and managed to keep Sequim to long range shots that were easily handled by keeper Annie McHugh.

Girls High School Soccer At Kingston High School

Varsity:  Port Townsend High School 3 (HT 0) v Kingston HS  0

Scorers:

Port Townsend -  Quinn Grewell (68 minutes) Brynne Gambill (72 and 78)

It was an honor to play the opening games at the new High school in Kingston. The field was in great condition and the weather was hot and sunny. Kingston played the first 30 minutes at breakneck speed and pushed PT back into their own half for much of that time. Slowly the tide began to turn as Kingston tired and PT brought their passing game into play. The second half saw PT press much harder and Cici Rennie, Elena Akins and Brianna Hemsley began to dominate the game. In minute 68 Quinn Grewell floated a great long free kick over the Kingston goalkeeper to score and shortly afterwards Brynne Gambill rose above the defense to head home a corner kick from Khloe Frank. The afternoon was capped off with a fine through ball from Khloe Frank which found Brynne Gambill. Brynne outpaced two defenders before striking a left footed low drive into the bottom corner of the goal. Kingston will not be easy for anyone and the side contains a number of outstanding players.

Fine performances from the whole team with special mention for Breanna Hemsley, Cici Rennie, Elena Akins, GK Jessie Stenehjem and Brynne Gambill.

Junior Varsity

Kingston HS 2 (1) Port Townsend 1 (1)

Against a good Kingston JV team PT struggled at first to find any offense. The breakaway occurred in the 38th minute when Emelina Berkshire broke through to score a fine goal. Kingstons reply was swift and within 5 minutes they were level. The game was fairly even until the 65th minute a looping shot from Kingston won the game.

Fine performances from Ella Piatt, goalkeeper Kerri Evalt, Liya Rubio and Jessica Evalt.

Varsity Port Townsend High School 2 (HT 2) vs Port Angeles 0

Scorers:

Port Townsend -  Khloe Frank (5 minutes) Jennifer Grauberger (25 mins)

Another fine team performance gave PT a comfortable victory in this pre-season game. The first half was played at a very high pace and the PA team was pegged back in its own half for most of that time.  The second half was a little slower and PA applied more pressure but the result never seemed in doubt. Khloe Frank scored with a low shot from a free kick after 5 minutes of play and Jennifer Grauberger completed the scoring with tap in at the far post off a free kick from Anna Aikins. Some fine passing moves created many more chances but none were finished.

Excellent performances by Khloe Frank, Elena Akins, Breanna Hemsley and Lydia Young.

Junior Varsity – Port Townsend 0 Port Angeles 1 (0)

Most of the game was spent in the PT half but the resolute defending was finally broken late in the second half. The team was missing several players through insufficient number of practices but overall held their shape well and defended with determination.

Excellent games by Ella Piatt, Kerri Evalt, Liya Rubio and Annie McHugh.

Port Townsend High School 5 (HT 1) vs Kings West 0

Kings West arrived at this game with a team that was without many the players who had failed to complete their 10 practices. Port Townsend was also without some key players but managed to put on a spirited performance. In truth PT dominated the game and only early season finishing prevented a rather lopsided score. It was an encouraging start to the season with all players working very well as a team. Excellent performances by Elena Akins, Anna Akins, Margarete Moore, Khloe Frank, Claire Sarff-Foden and Quinn Grewell.

Scorers: PT :  Breanna Hemsley, Brynne Gambill (2), Anna Akins, Claire Sarff-Foden
