PTHS Soccer Roundup Week of April 14, 2008
On Tuesday the Redskins traveled to Port Angeles to meet the Roughriders. Twice in the match the Redskins held leads only to see the riders come back to even the match. In the first half Daniel Berg hit a goal just six minutes into the match on a breakaway. “We had a number of chances to put Port Angeles away early in the match, but we were not able to finish,” said Short. Port Angeles tied the match just 30 seconds before the half when the Redskins were unable to clear a corner kick and Raphael Carvalho knocked it in the back of the net. The Redskins again scored early in the second half when Berg hit again off an assist by Alex Lockwood. Port Angeles equalized the game again 15 minutes later with a goal by James McKee. Both teams had chances but were unable to score in the remainder of regulation or in the 10 minutes of overtime. Jesse Yourish and Ethan Berg both had some great saves in goal to help us preserve the tie,” said Short. Fearless award: Daniel Berg On Saturday, the Redskins faced 2A rival Sequim. The first half was a defensive contest, neither team in scoring the 40 minutes. “Sequim played a very physical game that challenged our team,” Said Port Townsend Coach Dean Short. Just nine minutes into the second half Port Townsend took the lead as Ross Bringgold put in a perfect header off a free kick by Daniel Berg. “It was one of the best plays we have had this season,” observed Short. Sequim evened the match when John Textor hit a goal from a corner kick with about 15 minutes left in the match. The defense for both teams tightened in the rest of regulation and both five-minute overtimes. Sequim out shot the Redskins 14 to 8. "It was a well played match, at times we were able to out possess Sequim, but they played really hard. Ross Bringgold was very big for us. He scored our goal and came back and played after being injured," Said Port Townsend Coach Dean Short. Fearless Award: Ross Bringgold The Junior Varsity boys had a successful week winning the match against Port Angeles 1-0 on a goal by Ryan Crace and holding Sequim to a 0-0 tie on Saturday. “We are visibly improving and our progress has continued with each week. I am very pleased with our direction,” said JV coach Sam Nowak.
