PTHS Soccer Roundup Week of April 21, 2008 In Tuesday’s contest at Kingston, the Redskins jumped out on top but were unable to maintain the lead. Luis Quintana started the scoring by hitting a goal following a great possession by the Redskins. The team was able to put together several passes, culminating in a two-versus-one on the Kingston keeper. Sam Selisch passed the ball to Quintana, who calmly put the ball in the net. Kingston struck quickly to even the match just three minutes later when Josh Gilson outran the Port Townsend defense to the ball and beat keeper Jesse Yourish. The game was decided early in the second half when Gilson again used his speed to beat the defense and hit the game winner just 20 seconds into the half. The Redskins had several chances to even the match but were unable to finish; the final score was 2-1. "We had a letdown to start the second half and let them get away with the match. Our season is much more difficult now," said Short. Fearless Award: Sebastian Lyons Port Townsend fell behind early against Klahowya, allowing the Eagles to score just 2 minutes into the match on a goal by Marc Barbosa. After that it was all Redskins. Alex Lockwood started the scoring for Port Townsend at about 15 minutes by hitting a through ball from Daniel Berg into the back of the net. Lockwood assisted Luis Quintana on the next goal about 10 minutes later to close the scoring in the first half. In the second half Quintana got the Redskins started scoring off a Lockwood assist in the sixth minute. Lockwood scored again when he took a free kick from Berg and hit it past the keeper. With about five minutes to go in the match, Berg hit the final goal when Hab Rubio hit the ball off the post and Berg hit the ricochet by the keeper. "We didn't start very well but eventually we were able to posses the ball and score some goals. Alex Lockwood and Luis Quintana worked well together up top and helped our offense," said Dean Short, Port Townsend coach. Fearless Award: Alex Lockwood, Jamie Hodgson On Sunday, April 27 the varsity played for fun and pride against an alumni team at Memorial Field, emerging with a 4-1 win. The match was competitive but the varsity was too much for the alumni team, which had its chances but was only able to score a single goal by David Hoffman, who played on the 2000 and 2001 PTHS teams. Scoring for the varsity were Alex Lockwood with two goals and Daniel Berg with two goals. Fourteen former Redskins turned out to play for the alumni. Kevin Coate provided colorful play-by-play from the announcer’s booth. “I think everyone had fun,” said Short. “It’s great to keep up the tradition and see these alumni players return,” said Short. Fearless Award: All of the Alumni for participating |
