PTHS Soccer Roundup Week of March 24, 2008 Fearless Award The coaches give out an award after each match to the player who demonstrates a “Fearless” attitude. Prior “Fearless players have been: Game 1 vs Kingston – Ethan Berg Game 2 vs Mark Morris – Ross Bringgold Game 3 vs Klahowya – Daniel Berg Game 4 vs Stielcoom – Jamie Hodgson On Tuesday, March 25 the Redskins defeated the North Mason Bulldogs in a high-scoring tilt, 7-3. “We got on top early and didn’t let up the entire match,” said Short. On a night with heavy rain and a muddy field, Port Townsend scored first just 50 seconds into the game. Sam Selisch hit a ball right in front of the Bulldog goal into the back of the net. Ross Bringgold had the assist. In the fourth minute Bringgold hit Port Townsend’s second goal, scoring off an assist by Alex Lockwood. Daniel Berg put the Redskins up 3-0 on a volley off a pass from Bringgold. North Mason closed the gap on a goal by speedy forward Manuel Santigo before Lockwood struck just one minute later on a Selisch assist. Lockwood scored again on a through ball from Bringgold to close the first-half scoring. In the second half North Mason tallied another goal by Santiago but Lockwood again answered, completing his three-goal hat trick. Bringgold had his fourth assist on that goal. “It was great to see Alex break out by scoring three goals,” Short said. “And Ross’ distribution from the midfield makes the entire team better.” Sam Selisch scored Port Townsend’s final goal of the night in the 55th minute of the match. Berg had the assist. The Bulldogs added a late goal on a PK by Alex Duke. "We played well despite poor weather and difficult field conditions. We did a good job of possessing the ball and finished when we had a chance. Luis Quintana really provided a spark by making good runs all night," added Short. The Fearless award winners for this game were Luis Quintana and Ben Callaway. A first-half defensive struggle against 3A Bremerton on March 27 at Memorial Field left both the Redskins and the Knights scoreless, but three second-half goals in less than 10 minutes gave the Port Townsend soccer boys an edge. Their 3-0 win earned them second place standing in the Olympic League. “We looked sluggish in the first half, but were able to turn it up in the second half to get the win,” said a pleased coach Dean Short. Daniel Berg collected his league-leading eighth goal against Bremerton, scoring off a cross from Sam Selisch in the 50th minute of the match. “Daniel is the scoring engine that makes us go,” said Short. Midfielder Will George followed two minutes later on a pass from Ross Bringgold, who then scored his own goal when he chipped it over the Bremerton goalkeeper’s head to close out the scoring. The Redskins continue to be efficient scorers. They were outshot against the Knights 16-12, but were able to score on many of their chances. They have been outshot in all but one of their matches but have been defeated only once. The win, put Port Townsend 3-0-1 in league play and 3-1-2 overall. They are currently in second place in the Olympic league The Fearless award winner for this match was Ethan Berg. The Redskins have a break in play during spring vacation this week. They next face 3A powerhouse Olympic on Tuesday April 8 at Silverdale Stadium. JV is at 5 p.m.; varsity is at 6:45 p.m. Port Townsend’s junior varsity earned its first win of the season on March 25, defeating North Mason 14-1. Matt MacLachlan, Andy Danner and Hab Rubio each earning a hat trick. In Thursday’s match, the Redskins erased a 2-0 deficit to tie Bremerton 2-2 on goals by Chris Shively and Rubio.
