Right now our kids are wrestling about as well as they ever have. Ryan Unbedacht, JJ Blake, Brett Johnson, Christian DuBois and Gatlin Hanna wrestled very strongly and are looking toward the post season. We had 5 freshmen in the line up tonight due to injuries and sickness and even though they did not win, they wrestled about as well as they could. I could not be more proud of them. Next we wrestle at Foss High School , then we are home for our final match against Sequim next Wednesday.

Wednesday, January 9 vs Kingston & Thursday, January 10 vs Klahowya

It has been an exciting two days for the PT High School wrestling team.  With only one loss we were right in the hunt to win the Olympic League Championship.  Against Kingston we were down 35 - 6 with 6 matches to go and had to win all of them to win the match, we did and won the match 38-35.  The final win by fall came from first year wrestler Chris Kimball, but he is too big to carry off the mat.  It was fun.  Then on Thursday night we had to win one of three of the last matches and couldn't get it done, so we lost 42-34 to Klahowya.  Also coming down to the last match.  Mathematically we are still in the hunt as is about 3 other teams.  We have to get someone to beat Olympic and then there could be about a 4 way tie for the league championship.  Everyone keeps beating everyone else.  Our young and inexperienced wrestlers have really done a great job stepping up and getting wins or keeping the scores close so that we have chances to win matches.  Mitchell Harper, Chris Kimball, Mikail Callahan, Justin Callahan, and Stevie Weaver.  All have had outstanding performances.  We expect wins from our more experienced wrestlers, Brett Johnson, Richard and Gatlin Hanna, Christian Dubois, Ryan Unbedacht, JJ Blake and Josh Holbrook.  That is what has made us successful this year.  On Wednesday some of our more experience wrestlers made mistakes and we had some absences due to illness, this cost us the match.  As a team we are still young and losses are a valuable learning experience.  We will only get better.  Here are the results for the last two nights.  Next Thursday we will be wrestling North Mason at home at 7:00 pm.  This also should prove to be a close and exciting match.

Friday & Saturday, January 4 & 5, 2008 - Rainshadow Tourney at Sequim

The Rainshadow wrestling tournament in Sequim went well for the Redskin Wrestling team. The tournament was comprised of 18 teams of 2A, 3A and 4A teams. Port Townsend took 5th place, falling from 4th when in the last match of the tournament Klahowya won their championship match by fall, and thus taking 4th place from the Redskins. We were unable to take a compete team but those who went did quite well. We got off to a slow start and after Friday night we were in 12 place. We came back on Saturday and the wrestlers who lost their first matches stepped it up and really scored a lot of points for us. Out of 12 kids, we placed 7, with two in the finals. Individual place winners were:
112 Ryan Unbedacht placed 4th
135 Josh Holbrook placed 5th
145 Bryce Mihelich placed 6th
152 Brett Johnson placed 2nd
171 Christian DuBois placed 3rd
171 Richard Hanna placed 4th
189 Gatlin Hanna placed 2nd

Christian DuBois who has been injured all year lost his first match Friday night and then came back Saturday and won 5 straight to place 3rd. It was certainly a long but rewarding day for him. Bryce Mihelich won his first two matches Friday and assured himself of his best finish ever with a 6th place in a large tournament. We have had a pretty bleak past two weeks it was nice to see the kids start to return to what they are capable of doing. We are still young and make a lot of mistakes but we continue getting better. This week will be a tough week as we have Kingston on Wednesday, Klahowya on Thursday, both away, and then on friday we leave for the Hoquiam tournament on saturday.

On the next note; We will be holding our elementary wrestling clinic begining next Monday, the 14th. Practice will run for 1 hour beginning at 4:30 and will run 2 days per week on Monday and Wednesdays. The clinic will end on February 13th. Cost is $25 per student and will include t-shirt and a medal. Parents can enroll their sons or daughters on the first night of practice. Any questions please call Joey or Jonna Johnson at 379-8215.

Wednesday, December 12, 2007

What a night it was for the Redskins, Leads changed hands several times during both matches. Several times I thought there was little chance of winning. But winning they did. These young wrestlers believe in themselves. They got the pins when we needed them and beat two 3A teams. Our better kids we expect to win, these matches were won by our younger kids. First Trey Ottoway at 125 who pulled out a pin against Gabe of Penninsula to sew up the first win over Peninsula. and in the second match Mitchell Harper pulls out a fall over Scott Belcher of Port Angeles.

Saturday, December 4, 2007 @ Bremerton

Here are the results for last weeks wrestling for december 4th at Bremerton against Bremerton and Olympic

Our first match was against Bremerton and we got off to a slow start trailing 23-0 before we got things rolling the right way. Our first win didn't come until the 130 pound weight classs, When freshman Kris Windell pinned Mark Ebay in 27 seconds of the first round. The match was finally cinced when Gatlin Hanna pinned his opponent, Glenn Calahan in 1:06 of the first period. We went on to win the match 48-35.

In our second match against Olympic we knew we were in for a battle. Olympic placed in the top teams last year in the State 3A tournament and in our duel last year we only won one match. We certainly improved over last year's performance. And in a lot of cases showed we can wrestle with some of the best. It is nice this year to field a complete team and not have to give up forfeits at weights as we have done in the past. Kris Windle, freshman at 130, filling in for senior, JJ Blake, is dong a fine job winning both matches with pins. Gatlin Hanna continues to dominate his weight class as he is still undefeated at 7-0.

Saturday, December 2, 2007 @ Forks

It was a day that began very early and ended very late, but for the Wrestling Redskins it was a fine opening. We didn't take a full team so we didn't have high expectations, we only hoped for improvement. At a point about halfway through the tournament the announcer announced the team standings. He began with in 9th place, (I thought, "Oh I wish he wouldn't do that, I didn't think we were there but last year we were there a lot..... in 8th, 7th, 6th, 5th, I think they forgot us, 4th, I get up to go see if they did, in 3rd place Port Townsend, WOW!!, and without a full team. We ended in 4th for the tournament, a very good showing for us even with a young and incomplete team. We had two champions; at 112 Ryan Unbedacht, and at 189, Gatlin Hanna.
In second place; Tyler Westlund
In third Place; 152, Brett Johnson and 171 Richard Hanna
In 5th place; at 135: Josh Holbrook,
in 6th place at 140 Bryce Mihelich and 275 Chris Fetterman.
It was certainly a nice way to begin the season and we have a long way to go. For the most part the kids have worked hard in the off season and want to be a competitive team. We have a few that know they will have to step it up to be successful. Lots of good lessons learned in this first competition.

November 29, 2007 @ Port Angeles Jamboree

We have a lot of students out this year for wrestling, a very strong freshman group and not graduating any seniors has helped our numbers.

The first outing at the Port Angeles Jamboree was very encouraging.  Hard work and a lot of patience is beginning to pay off.  If you keep score and no one was the Redskins won two of three matches last night.  Beating Forks and Sequim, losing to Port Angeles but proving that we can wrestle and be a competitive team.
