The daily schedule includes Guided or Independent Reading, Word Study and Writer's Workshop.

Reading

First Steps reading framework provides structure. Running records are used to assess, with students involved in identifying their own "just-right" reading level. Daily teacher read-aloud develops an appreciation of literature. Song and Poetry Books connect community singing with literacy. Library lessons are done by teacher.

Guided Reading (Fountas & Pinell approach): Small groups are led by teacher and parents. Teacher assists parents in developing activities for groups; parents give feedback on learner progress to teacher. Groups select a book from several choices provided by teacher.

Independent Reading with Reading Responses: Learners read from "just right" books and demonstrate comprehension by writing a response about what has been read. More experienced readers form literature circles. Genre Reading Wheels are provided to encourage diversity in reading choices.

Writing

Writer's Workshop: Learners write daily as part of Math, Science and Social Studies as well as Writer's Workshop. Learners participate in the all-district Fall & Spring Writing Prompt (both expository and narrative). The Six-Trait writing rubric is used for assessment. Mini-lessons for grammar and conventions are incorporated as needed. Cocoa House gives a purpose for writing. The learners are also published once per trimester in an anthology. Each child has a computer file containing all their writing for their years in OPEPO.

Spelling (Fountas & Pinell Word Study Program): Independent word study program, with 5 words/week taken from each learner's own writing. Various activities are used to learn the words, leading to a Friday Quiz.

Handwriting/Cursive (D'Nealian System): Grades 1-3 the focus is on legibility of print. Grades 4-6 focus on cursive.
